Who We Are

The NYC Department of Correction (DOC) employs just over 9,500 uniformed staff and 1,400 civilian staff who manage the care, custody and control of inmates committed to our jails. They keep the inmates secure-making the community safer and more comfortable for New Yorkers and their families-while putting their careers on the fast track to success. The DOC serves an average daily inmate population of nearly 14,000 individuals, and another 100,000 a year admitted to custody-housed throughout 10 facilities on Rikers Island in the middle of the East River, as well as in a special hospital, adolescent facility, fifteen court pens, and the borough jails in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx (currently, only Manhattan is operating). We look for like-minded individuals who want the challenge of responsibility and the rewards of being part of a team that is boldly committed to making our city secure for everyone.

What We Offer

You can rise through the ranks of the DOC—from Officer to Captain through the Warden ranks to Chief—and all the while, your pride and earnings will keep on increasing, too. Currently, we offer:

  • Salary increases to $36,132 after six months of service
  • Salary increases to $65,841 after 5 1/2 years of service
  • Uniform allowance of $1100 per year
  • 16 paid vacation days, increasing to 27 days after 5 years
  • 11 paid holidays
  • Longevity pay ranges from $3,859 to $6,859 after 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of service
  • Great pension plan, with the opportunity to retire after 20 years of service
