You may take Exam #8053 (test date Saturday, November 1, 2008); however your application must be postmarked by August 15, 2008.
- Is there an application fee to take the Correction Officer Exam?
In conjunction with the New York City Department of Administrative Services (DCAS), there is a thirty-dollar ($30.00) filing fee. You are able to use your credit card if you apply online, or mail a money order made payable to DCAS with a paper application.
- Where may I request or receive a paper application and Notice of Examination?
You can receive a paper application and the Notice of Examination by one of the following ways:
- Visiting our website www.nyboldest.com
- Visiting your local Library or DMV
- Visiting the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, Application Section at 18 Washington Street, New York, NY 10004
- Any Department of Labor office throughout the City.
- Calling our Hotline 877-NY1-BOLD or (877) 691-2653 to have an application mailed to you.
- How can I change my address?
Report your change of address and telephone number in writng to the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services, 1 Centre Street, New York, NY, 10007. Your letter should include your name, social security number, your exam and list number, your old address and telephone number and your new address and telephone number.
- What is the application process?
- You must complete and submit an application during the respective filing period indicated above:
- Applications must be submitted online OR applications must be postmarked by the last day of the filing period of the exam you are applying for and mailed to:

- You will receive an Admissions Card from DCAS telling you when and where to go to take the exam. You will receive this card between 5 and 10 days before the exam date. You must take and pass the Correction Officer Exam.
- After you pass the written exam, your name will be placed on the Correction Officer list. Once you are on the list, you usually have no more than four years to get all the requirements necessary to be appointed, although it is advisable to act as quickly as possible.
- I didn't receive my admissions card for the exam. What do I do?
You should receive an Admission Card in the mail about 10 days before the date of the test. If you do not receive an Admission Card at least 4 days before the test date, you must go to the Examining Service Section, 1 Centre Street, 14th Floor Manhattan, to obtain a duplicate card.
- What are the qualifications to be hired as a Correction Officer?
By the date of appointment you must have one of the following (neither can be combined with one or the other):
- Successfully completed 39 semester credits at an accredited college or university. In addition, you must complete an additional 21 semester credits, which may be satisfied by successful completion of Academy training, to total 60 semester credits by the end of Academy Training; or
- A four-year high school diploma or it's educational equivalent, and have completed two years of honorable full time US military service; or
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and two years of full time experience (a) in positions classified as Police Officers pursuant to Section 1.20, subd. 34, of the NYS Criminal Procedure Law, or (b) in positions classified as Peace Officers pursuant to Section 2.10 of the NYS Criminal Procedure Law, or (c) in positions requiring Special Patrolman designation, or (d) in positions Federal law enforcement or law enforcement in other status or designations equivalent to (a), (b), or (c) above.
- Are there special preferences given to military personnel?
The On-The Job Training (OJT) Program offers eligible military veterans an alternative way to use their Veterans Administration (GI Bill) education and training benefits while employed by the New York City Department of Correction.
Eligible Probationary Correction Officers are entitled to receive monthly monetary benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs for up to two years, in addition to their regular salary, while employed as probationary officer.
- I am on active military duty; can I defer my processing until I am discharged?
You may request to defer processing by having your superior officer prepare a letter on your behalf on official military stationery. The letter must verify your active duty status and must include your name, social security number, exam and list number and your expected date of discharge. Make two copies and send:

- I was recently discharged from the military, how do I get back on the list?
If your list is still valid contact the Department of Correction Applicant Investigation Unit with your DD214. If your list has expired, you must first report with your DD214 to the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Service, Municipal Building, 1 Centre Street, New York, 10007. They will notify you by mail within three weeks whether you are entitled to a list extension. If you are granted the extension, then you must contact the Department of Correction Applicant Investigation Unit with the extension letter and your DD214.
Note: Extensions on an expired list may be granted provided your list number was actually reached for hire.
- Is there an age requirement?
You must be at least 17 ½ years by the last date of the application period to take the examination. Additionally, eligibles must have attained age 21 to be appointed as a Correction Officer. At this time there is no maximum age.
- Do you have to be a United States Citizen to be a Correction Officer?
You do not have to be a United States citizen to take the Correction Officer Exam, but you must be a United States citizen on or before the date of hire.
- Do you have to have a New York State Driver's License?
On the date of hire you must possess a valid, unrestricted New York State Driver's License.
- Do you have to be a resident of New York City?
You do not have to be a resident to take the Correction Officer Exam, but on the day of appointment you must reside in New York City or one of the surrounding counties of NYC which are: Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Nassau or Suffolk.
- What will disqualify me from being hired as a Correction Officer?
Some factors that may cause you not to be hired:
- Any conviction of an offense which is punishable by one or more years imprisonment (felony)
- Any repeated convictions of an offense which indicate a disrespect for the law, lack of good moral character or disposition towards violence and disorder
- Discharge from employment, where such discharge indicates poor and/or inability adjusting to discipline
- A dishonorable discharge from the Armed Forces
- Persons convicted of Petit Larceny
- Persons convicted of Any Domestic Violence
- Is there any study material or tutoring classes offered?
Yes, the Department does offer a tutorial program and will provide you with proper notice of such.
- After I pass the written exam, what other requirements are needed to be hired?
After a candidate has successfully passed the written examination, candidates must also pass a character and background examination, oral psychological and written exam, drug/alcohol screening, medical, fire safety, and physical agility test.
- If I do not meet any of the requirements, how may I get started?
To become a New York City Correction Officer, you must have at least 39 college credits from an accredited college or university. - What are the benefits and salary of a Correction Officer?
The starting salary for a Correction Officer is $27,734 for the first six months. Upon completion of six months the salary will rise to $36,132. Incumbents will receive salary increments reaching $65,841 per annum at the completion of five and half years of service.

- How long after the test can I be hired?
In as little as three (3) months.
- What are the duties of a Correction Officer?
Correction Officers, under proper supervision, maintain security within correctional facilities and are responsible for the care, custody and control of inmates in detention and sentenced Correctional Facilities.
- Are there promotional opportunities in the Correction Department?
Employees in the title of Correction Officer are afforded an opportunity to be promoted to the title of Captain (Correction) and from that title, to Warden (Correction) at several assignment levels, all the way up to Chief of Department.
- Is there any training involved in becoming a Correction Officer?
The New York City Correction Department offers a paid sixteen-week training program the Correction Academy located in Queens New York.
- What other work assignments are offered besides working in the city jails?
After your probationary period has ended you may request to work in one of the following units, however, seniority drives the assignment process as many of these units are considered preferred and desirable:
- Canine Unit
- Communications Unit
- Transportation Division
- Emergency Services Unit
- Hospital Prison Wards
- Fire & Safety Unit
- Firearms and Tactics Unit
- Correction Industries Division
- Support Services Division
